Calculate your Kua number – your personal lucky directions

The Kua number is the easiest way into personal feng shui. It comes from your birth year in the Chinese solar calendar and your gender and lies between 1 and 9. Each number belongs to either the east or the west group – and thus to four directions that are good for you and four that you should rather avoid.

You belong to the West group. This means four directions are good for you and four less so. Here you see which ones – and what to use them for.

Favourable

  • Southwest – Life qi: Success, drive and prosperity – the strongest favourable direction. Ideal for the front door, your facing direction at the desk and important meetings.
  • Northwest – Heavenly doctor: Health and support from others. Good for the head of the bed, the bedroom and recovery.
  • West – Extended years: Harmony in relationships, partnership and family. Good for the bedroom, living and dining room.
  • Northeast – Resting position: Stability, calm and inner clarity. Good for studying, meditation and as your facing direction for focused work.

Unfavourable

  • South – Mishap: Minor mishaps and annoyances. Better used for storage, bathroom or guest toilet.
  • North – Five ghosts: Quarrels, unrest and misunderstandings. Not for the entrance or sleeping; fine for the kitchen or storage.
  • East – Six killings: Gossip, legal trouble and losses. Good for the bathroom, laundry or storage.
  • Southeast – Severed life: The least favourable direction: setbacks and exhaustion. Ideally only for the bathroom, toilet or storage; avoid sleeping or working facing it.

How to apply it: place your desk so that you face a good direction while working, and your bed so that your head points in a good direction. Unfavourable directions suit the bathroom, storage or hallway. Often it is enough to turn the desk or bed a little.

This interpretation renders the traditional teaching in plain words. It is guidance, not a prediction and no substitute for professional advice.

The Chinese new year around 4 February (Li Chun) matters: people born in January or early February count with the previous year. The calculator takes care of this automatically. Use the best direction (Sheng Qi) for facing at your desk and for the front door, and the health direction (Tian Yi) for the head of the bed.
