Na Yin – the 30 sounds of the 60 pillars

Published on October 22, 2026

Each of the 60 pillars of the Chinese calendar has a third feature besides stem and branch: its Na Yin sound. Every two consecutive pillars share a pictorial element – such as “gold in the sea”, “fire in the furnace” or “wood of the great forest”. This yields 30 sounds that describe the basic mood of a pillar.

Where the sounds come from

Na Yin means “received sound”. The old teaching links the 60 pillars to the five tones of Chinese music. The result is an element that often differs from the stem's element – a wood stem can have a metal sound.

What the sound says

The Na Yin sound describes the character and image of a pillar. “Gold in the sea” stands for hidden potential that needs time; “water of the great river” for breadth and movement. The sound of the year pillar in particular is traditionally read as a person's basic tone.

Use

Na Yin is used for the personal basic tone, for compatibility comparisons (which sounds nourish or restrain each other) and in date selection. The sound tool derives colours, directions, a season and even a small melody from it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Na Yin sound?+

It follows from the year pillar of your birth. The free zodiac calculator shows it too.

Why does the sound differ from the stem element?+

Because it arises from the combination of stem and branch according to a musical system, not from the stem alone.

Is Na Yin more important than the elements in the chart?+

No, it is an additional layer. For the strength of the day master the stems and branches count.
