Date selection (Ze Ri) – finding the right day for weddings, moves and starts
Published on October 22, 2026
“Well begun is half done” – Chinese date selection takes this literally. Ze Ri means “selecting days”: for an important undertaking you look for a day whose energy suits the undertaking and the people involved.
Three levels of checking
First, the day quality from the almanac: day officer and day stars. Second, the fit with the people: the day must not clash with their zodiac animals or spouse palace. Third – if needed – the time of day, for example with Qi Men Dun Jia or favourable hours.
What suits which undertaking
Wedding: harmony and permanence – days with complete, open or settle. Moving: open the new, close the old. Opening: abundance and harvest, ideally with a prosperity star. Contract: commitment – settle and grasp. Demolition or separation: of all things the day “break”.
What to avoid
Days of the year and month breaker, the “ten great failures” and days that clash with your own zodiac animal. Traditionally you also do not start building work in the direction of the Tai Sui or the three killings.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should you search?+
For weddings often a year, for moves a few weeks. The more leeway, the better the day.
What if there is no perfect day?+
You choose the best available day without a clash. Perfect days are rare – avoiding the bad ones matters more.
Can I consider several people?+
Yes. The date finder checks all saved people at once, for example the couple and their parents.
