Tai Sui, Sui Po and three killings – the year's directions

Published on October 22, 2026

Every year has a “Grand Duke”, the Tai Sui. It sits in the direction of the year's zodiac animal. Opposite it lies the year breaker (Sui Po), and another direction carries the three killings (San Sha). These three directions are treated with respect during the year.

Tai Sui – do not face it

You should not “confront” the Grand Duke: do not place your desk so that you face his direction, and do not dig or renovate in that area. Having him at your back is fine – there he is considered support.

Sui Po – the year breaker

The direction opposite the Tai Sui is considered the breaking point of the year. Do not start building work here and do not approach important matters from this direction.

Three killings – turn your back to it

The three killings always lie in one of the four cardinal directions. Unlike the Tai Sui you should not have them at your back but in front of you – sit so that you face their direction. Building work in this area is also avoided.
